Cultural Revolution Poster Block print Mao
This Cultural Revolution poster features Mao standing in front of winter plum flower branches in his People's Liberation Army coat. The poem was written by Mao in December 1961. The poem describes the plum flowers blossoms in the winter, though it is the most beautiful thing seen in the winter, the flowers are so modest and not competing with the rest of the severe natural environment. The speculation was Mao wrote these poems on surface to praise the beautiful country of China, he is also implying that he being the most powerful figure in the country, yet he remains to be modest. What is very unusual about this poster is that it was created by Xin Jiang World Cultural Revolution Committee. Xin Jiang, which literately translates into "New Territory", like Tibet, is currently occupied by the Chinese government. Xin Jiang is predominately populated with Central Asian Muslims. Geographically speaking, it is on the Northwestern part of China and boarders several central Asian countries, including Afghanistan. Its cultural heritage has been kept in tact, however the influence of Han, the majority Chinese, is more visible and tolerated than it is in Tibet. This poster was created in January 1968. Size: 20" T by 15" Wide.
