| This
is one of my father's favorite pieces. It was completed in the
late 1980s. Crafted completely in large zitan log and by hand,
the design is in a mid Qing or "Qian-Long" period
style, with intricate carvings throughout. The hand carving
depicts peaches, gourds, bats and dragons, which symbolize happiness,
longevity, wealth and power respectively. We have learned that
in a 2000 auction in Beijing, a zitan painting table done by
the same carving artist in 2000, a bit smaller than this one,
was sold for 440,000 Yuan, or the equivalent of $55,000. The
table measures 2 meters long, 1 meter wide and 0.9 meters tall.
It weighs approximately 225 pounds. |
